Chromosaturation, 1965/2007 was acquired for PAMM’s collection in 2020 with funds provided by Jorge M. Pérez, thus crystallizing the long relationship between the artist and the city of Miami, where many of his artworks are installed in public spaces.
First conceived in 1965, as part of the Deconditioning Labyrinth, the Chromosaturations immerse the visitors in a monochromatic saturated environment that triggers the retina and challenges its perception of color. Through the transparent colored windows of PAMM's particular piece, the visitor is both an author who lives the experience of pure color, and an actor observed by external viewers in the artwork.
Reimagining color as an embodied experience, Chromosaturation is emblematic of Cruz-Diez’s contribution to the experimental practices that emerged in the 1960s and 1970s, which moved away from the creation of art objects in favor of participatory situations that engage the spectator’s body, senses, and subjectivity. Cruz-Diez’s experimentations with color and sensory perception would also anticipate the immersive, experiential tendencies that have become so prevalent in contemporary art today.
