RGB, THE COLORS OF THE CENTURY
DATE: FROM 1 JUNE 2024 TO 18 SEPTEMBER 2024
VENUE: HANGARAM MUSEUM, SEOUL ARTS CENTER, SEOUL, KOREA
Continuing its worldwide tour, the exhibition RGB, the Colors of the Century opens in the Hangaram Museum, a South Korean institution housed in the Seoul Arts Center, the country's largest complex of cultural venues.
The country has special bound with Cruz-Diez, as it has seen many institutional exhibitions throughout the years, since the 80's, and homes two monumental artworks, Physichromie Double Face (1988) in Seoul and Spiral Chromatic Induction (2002) in Yongin.
In these systematically programmed works, I have used only red, green, blue and black, plus the white that is contribute by the opaque medium. The effect appears contradictory because I obtain, with a non-luminous medium, the colours of a prism, the colours of light.
Cruz-Diez, 2014
Unlike many of his contemporaries, Cruz-Diez boldly turned his back on painting as a method of expression to focus instead on color itself as it is perceived by our eyes. One of the great artists of his era, he opened up new dimensions in optical art based on a lifetime of research. His works draw on scientific principles to provide new visual experiences and aesthetic impressions ironically in a pure and unique manner through optical effects.
